Overview
Genesis S4/8
The Genesis ServoSub™ 4/8 is an exceptional subwoofer with four ultra-fast 8-inch ribbed aluminum-cone woofers and an integral 500W servo-controlled amplifier. The hallmarks of the S4/8 are speed, delicacy, and articulation. Yet, it is capable of sonically portraying the most earth-shaking events in a home theater application.
When used to complement the Genesis 6.1c Center Channel, or any other center channel speaker for that matter, it adds "body" to the voice channel for home theater applications. Its unique form factor means that it can be used as a pedestal for placing a center channel speaker below a plasma TV, or behind a projection screen. The S4/8 is an excellent match to panel and electrostatic loudspeakers, adding the vital bass foundation to bass- shy models.
Dynamically Mass-Balanced Low Frequency Transducers
The S4/8 uses woofers that are made of lightweight yet inherently stiff aluminum. These precisely ribbed and contoured cones are free of the transient-blurring artifacts imposed by lesser materials, and have absolutely no breakup modes within their operating bandwidth.
While physically reproducing the lowest frequency sounds, these woofers impose a large dynamic load on their mounting surfaces. To eliminate potential sympathetic vibrations in the cabinet, the four 8-inch woofers are wired in phase and mounted in a balanced, opposed position in a heavily-braced cavity, virtually eliminating cabinet mechanical resonance.
With four 8-inch woofers, the air load becomes reactive at the lowest frequencies. Hence, with multiple smaller drivers, not having as much resistive air load at the lowest frequencies as larger drivers, the S4/8 sounds snappier and lighter in the mid to upper bass region. This is at the expense of a little heft at the lowest frequencies.
The S4/8 Servo Controlled Bass Amplifier
A precision accelerometer mounted to the woofer continuously monitors motion and sends a signal to high-speed circuitry that compares actual cone movement to the input signal. This comparison circuit identifies and then corrects any deviation from the input, even when they include complex, rapidly evolving musical bass lines or cinema special effects.
With this servo control, the transducers are essentially massless and anechoically flat. While typical non-servo woofer systems have distortion levels that exceed 10% at even moderate levels, the servo bass system reduces this distortion to below one percent at almost any output level.
The servo system places extraordinary demands on the amplifier since the system uses enormous amounts of current to precisely control the woofer. The S4/8's proprietary and ultra-efficient 500W Class-D discrete MOSFET switching amplifier is a prime example of intelligent power application in the service of sonic subtlety, delivering musically accurate and floor shaking bass.
